{"id":128,"date":"2015-06-17T13:57:09","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T12:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blogs\/?p=128"},"modified":"2016-07-11T02:18:34","modified_gmt":"2016-07-11T01:18:34","slug":"extending-the-gearstick-on-a-land-rover-defender90","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/extending-the-gearstick-on-a-land-rover-defender90\/","title":{"rendered":"Extending the gearstick on a Land Rover Defender\/90"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After installing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mudstuff.co.uk\/mud-defender-console.html\" target=\"_blank\">MUD Dash <\/a>it became even more apparent the LT85 gearbox has a little more &#8216;throw&#8217; compared to the LT77 or R380 .\u00a0 Part of the issue is the MUD dash now protrudes from the dash\u00a0 rather then being flush by about 3 inches.<\/p>\n<p>To resolve the constant bashing of buttons you can either bend the gear stick or extend it, I decided to extend as bending the stick will just make it sit lower to the floor when selecting 2nd and 4th and in an upright positing it isn&#8217;t to hand as I would like it be.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-170 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152710-444x600.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150617_152710\" width=\"444\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152710-444x600.jpg 444w, http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152710-768x1038.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152710-758x1024.jpg 758w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Extending the gear stick will give it a rally look, gone are the days of shortening a gear stick for a &#8216;quick-shift&#8217; look as you just need to move your arm\/hand further down! These days if you don&#8217;t have paddle shift its a better idea to bring the gear knob up as close to the steering wheel as possible, thus less movement to be able to change a gear.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The Land Rover 90\/Defender with a LT85 gearbox has\u00a015mm (approx.) solid gear stick with a thread cut into the end.<\/p>\n<p>To Extend the stick I simply ground down the existing thread and cut a new 12mm thread, M10.<\/p>\n<p>With the new thread this allows a threaded extender to screw on the newly cut gear stick.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-168 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152742-600x444.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150617_152742\" width=\"600\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152742-600x444.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152742-768x568.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.adienicholls.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_20150617_152742-1024x758.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using a high tensile steel bolt (8.8 &#8211; apparently this is the bolt rating meaning its high-tensile steal) with a 12mm thread simply tighten that into the extender you have screwed onto the newly cut thread.
